High Ercall or Ercall Magna, with the townships and hamlets of Cold Hatton, Cotwall, and Moortown, Cruddington, Ellerdine, Haughton, Isombridge, Osbaston, Poynton, Rowton, Tern and Walton, is an extensive parish, in the Wellington division of the South Bradford hundred, 6 miles N.N.W. from Wellington, and 8 miles N.E. from Shrewsbury. The churches dedicated to St Michael and is a vicarage, and the patronage of the Duke of Cleveland. Here is an endowed School for boys and girls, and an hospital for six aged men, founded by Francis, Earl of Bradford. Population in 1861, 1,969, and in 1871, 1,870.
